ARIES - March 21 to April 20.

Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, and correlating with the first day of Spring, likes beginnings. As a fire sign, they also love challenges, and are not afraid of battle. This energetic and charismatic group of people will inspire the less adventurous, and go where the rest of us aren’t so willing. Quick to anger and even quicker to let it go, the Aries temperament is filled with excitement for life, innate courage, and an ability to forget (both what we want them to forget, and what we wish they'd remember!) Ruled by the very fiery Mars.

TAURUS - April 21 to May 21.

We all have Taurus, and its planetary ruler, Venus, somewhere in our being. With Taureans we see how the charms of Venus/Aphrodite (goddess of love, beauty, sensuality, poetry, and seduction) bring inspiration to the soul. Taureans are given tenacity, strength, practicality, and beauty. Taurus is also stubborn, sometimes refusing to see beyond concrete reality. Their task is to find their way in the labyrinth of the emotional world, difficult but immensely rewarding.

 GEMINI - May 22 to June 21.

As the first of the air signs, Gemini’s are known for communication, but don’t assume that means they’re good at it. They’re here to learn about communication. They’ve usually got the talking part down; it’s the listening they need some help with. They’re also inventive, witty, playful, and great networkers, always joining ideas and people that haven’t been joined before. As twins, their "split personality" isn’t so much about having two sides as it is about two very different experiences of life: one very light, and the other, brooding. Ruled by Mercury, the winged messenger god, also known as Hermes, who was the quintessential trickster.

 CANCER - June 22 to July 23.

Cancer, the sign of the Great Mother, is often thought to be moody, changeable, and difficult to read. But what underlies these outer characteristics is deep and fascinating. Cancerians, who must spend time withdrawing under their shell, are also at once extraordinarily intuitive, warmly nurturing, imaginative, and fiercely protective of their loved ones. As the archetype of the great mother, you might feel a little smothered by a Cancer but they'll make up for it by being there when you really need them. Ruled by the Moon, and Ceres, goddess of the harvest.

 LEO - July 24 to August 23.

"Leo is the sign of royalty, creativity, entitlement, and big hearts. Leos come into the world with a great understanding of their birthright: to enjoy the world in all its glory. Out of this abundant zest for life, Leos give generously to those around them without reserve. They ask for nothing in return, except undying loyalty. This isn't all that hard to do, because Leos can be so warm, fun-loving, and funny! Just remember that they sometimes need a little reminder that not everyone will see things the same way they do, all the time. Ruled by the Sun (What else?)

VIRGO - August 24 to September 23.

Virgoans derive happiness from a sense of purpose. That purpose is usually associated with some sort of service, or achievement of perfection, in body, mind, and spirit. Born in the time of harvest, Virgoans understand the need forage: hard work and what it will bring. This is because they also know about the "fall," when charm and wit alone no longer open doors, and thus this sign shows great humility. Virgoans share with us their sense of order, their experience with serving others, and their longing for perfection. Ruled by Vesta (the vestal virgin) and Mercury.

 LIBRA - September 24 to October 23.

Librans need balance and harmony. If they seem wishy-washy, it’s only because they are so good at seeing both sides of every situation: deciding for one thing means deciding against something else. This is distasteful to Libra, and being tasteful is very important. So is avoiding conflict. Being a great diplomat, they always know when to say just the right thing. Keeping relationship open is key. Ruled by Venus, until the astronomers locate the as yet unnamed planet Persephone.

 SCORPIO - October 24 to November 22.

Scorpio is a complex and misunderstood sign. Its longings are deep and powerfully emotional. With piercing vision, its manner is direct and sometimes confrontational, yet with the underlying desire to support and transform. Its passions are varied, not always about sex and money, as the pop journals say, although sexuality and money, in all their layers of meaning, will more likely be addressed by Scorpio than any other sign. But Scorpio also embraces healing and sacred spirituality, and if you’re willing to be truly present with them, they will be loyal to you ‘til eternity. Ruled by the power planets Pluto and Mars, and secondarily by the asteroid goddesses Ceres and Vesta.

 SAGITTARIUS - November 23 to December 22.

You might think Sagittarians are hard to miss, given their zest for life and their big hearty laugh, but often as not, you will miss them because, they’re not here right now. The thing about Sagittarius is they love to travel, so just when you’ve fallen in love with their expansive minds and incredible views of life, doggonit, they’re gone. Off to the Appalachian trail for a two-week trek, or they’re thinking of moving to the San Juan islands, or Fuji. The archer’s bow must fly, and with it goes the Sagittarian. Ruled by Jupiter (Zeus ~ the King of the gods and goddesses) and Chiron, the Centaur, also known as the Wounded Healer.

 CAPRICORN - December 23 to January 20.

Capricorns are the quintessential parents. They’re born that way. They know instinctively how to care for others, at least regarding security, safety, and providing for the ones they love. Emotionally, Capricorns have a harder time. Showing feelings is considered weak, and as the CEO of the zodiac, Capricorns don’t usually risk that. Being the third earth sign, their cool exterior might fool you. But underneath their business-like approach to life, a soft teddy bear is waiting to be found. Ruled by that no-nonsense task-master Saturn.

 AQUARIUS - January 21 to February 19.

"Aquarians are weird!" is a generally held belief. Maybe yes, maybe no. What they are is committed, either to a cause or purpose or even to making trouble, that is, for those who think they have everything all sewn up. Aquarians know the importance of new ideas, particularly social change, and they’re happy to tell you about these ideas, whether they actually believe in them or not, often just to see how you will react. As the third air sign, these folks are not typically emotionally expressive; they’re not the "clinging" type in a relationship. But that doesn’t mean they won’t stick around. Ruled by Uranus, that weird planet!

 PISCES - February 20 to March 20.

Pisceans seem to float through life, somehow magically surviving the craziest of fixes. Do they have a guardian angel? Apparently so. How else could they manage to come out so often smelling like a rose? But as they are taken care of, so they take care of others. Pisces is about service, and trust, and compassion. They will see the greatness in you long before you do (unless you're a Leo), always reminding you of your potential, even when no one else can see it. That's the gift of their cosmic awareness.
